Dead Cells for PC is a roguelike metroidvania game (sometimes called a roguevania game), where the player embodies a slime-like creature that controls a corpse to achieve its aims. Roguelike games are typically set underground with dark themes and the threat of permadeath, though some have other characteristics. Metroidvania games combine elements of Metroid and Castlevania, featuring rooms or areas that can only be accessed after collecting certain items, such as keys or skills. These games are usually, but not always, side-scrolling.

Get Started!
Players explore rooms and chambers, gathering weapons, treasure, and tools while facing undead creatures. The in-game currency, known as cells, is used to purchase permanent upgrades and unlock new levels. However, players must reach a store between levels to save their progress, as dying causes the loss of all gathered equipment and cells.
Storyline
The player assumes the role of The Prisoner, starting in a dungeon from which they must escape. Throughout the game, the backstory of a mysterious plague called ‘The Malaise’ is revealed. This plague transformed the island’s population into mindless zombies. The player’s objective is to fight through the dungeons to the throne room and kill the king, after which the game resets, and the player must start over. As the game progresses, The Prisoner discovers startling truths that lead to the final resolution of the story.

Keepers and Notable Characters
The game features several key characters and level bosses, known as Keepers, as well as other notable figures:
- The Concierge: The first gatekeeper, previously the king’s guard, now transformed by The Malaise.
- Conjunctivious: Once a bloated corpse, now a tentacled Lovecraftian monster.
- The Time Keeper: A female Keeper with power over time, resetting every day to prevent her own infection.
- The Giant: A massive skeleton creature added via DLC, the Keeper of The Cavern, revealing crucial information to The Prisoner.
- The Hand of the King: The king’s personal guard, who must be defeated before facing the comatose king.
- The Collector: Trades valuables for cells, which can be obtained from treasure or defeated enemies.
- The Blacksmith: Although not a Keeper, the blacksmith upgrades and improves the player’s weapons and ammunition.
